Cold River bridge - Irene damage
Date: Aug 28, 2011Latitude: 42.633331Longitude: -72.974254Location: Florida / Savoy, MAWatershed: Cold RiverThe Cold River caused great damage to several stretches of Route 2 during Tropical Storm Irene. In this photo, taken during the storm, extensive scouring of the upstream bridge abutment can be seen. Black Brook joins the Cold River just out of this picture, to the right. Black Brook flows pushed water and debris out into the Cold, directing flows towards this spot and exacerbating the damage.

Streambank planting
Latitude: 42.512811Longitude: -72.743406Location: South River / Chapel Brook confluence, Conway MAWatershed: DeerfieldVegetative planting in soil with fabric overlain to assist in retention of soil. With time and vegetative growth, these should continue to capture sedients during high flows and build a more stable, albeit quite narrow riparian area that will serve as a buffer between the retaining wall and the stream.
