The UMass Turf program will continue the long tradition of a Research Field Day in South Deerfield on August 1, 2012. Turf practitioners and their associates will have the opportunity to meet and speak with UMass staff and to view projects underway. The event will feature a trade show, and demonstrations and exhibits from numerous industry vendors will be featured. All in attendance will be invited to enjoy continental breakfast and a hearty barbecue lunch.
Current UMass research includes studies on the biology and integrated management of turf-damaging insects, short- and long-term weed management, pesticide exposure, fertility, drought management, as well as a range of National Turfgrass Evaluation Program fine turf trials. In addition, several on-going projects focus on best management practices and the conservation of precious natural resources, particularly water. Specific topics planned for the 2012 Field Day include:
- Efficient Irrigation for Recreational Turf: Evapotranspiration and Crop Coefficients
- Wear Tolerance Of Perennial Ryegrass Cultivars Under Golf Fairway Height-Of-Cut
- Turfgrass Disease Control Strategies and a Review of New Active Ingredients
- Demonstration of a Fungicide Resistance Field Kit for Dollar Spot
- Organic Land Care Practices for Maintaining Sustainability of Athletic Field Turf
- Methiozolin (PoaCureTM): A New Management Tool for Annual Bluegrass
- Evaluating Drought Resistance And Recovery Of Fairway Turf
- Constructed Wetlands for Reclamation of Equipment Wash Water
- Protecting Pollinators in the Landscape
The date for Field Day 2012 has been moved back from our traditional mid-June slot. This change was made recently in response to popular demand for an opportunity to view turf in the stressful summer period and perhaps better distinguish experimental differences.
