Wes Autio, plant, soil and insect sciences, says there is more interest in fruit growing among backyard farmers and small growers. He says this may be related to the idea that locally grown fruit and produce is healthier and more nutritious. There is also a sentimental attachment to picking fresh fruit, especially harvesting apples in the fall, he says.

The Pioneer Valley is hosting the first international conference on advancing the effectiveness of biological rather than chemical control of invasive and non-native species such as aquatic plants, adelgids and tree-killing borers at UMass Amherst. The conference runs from Oct. 3-7 is expected to draw researchers from across the United States, Canada and from China, Ecuador, Mexico, South Africa, Guyana, New Zealand, England and Australia. Roy Van Driesche, a UMass Extension entomologist in the plant, soil and insect sciences department, organized the event.

Robert Childs, UMass Extension, discusses the marmorated stink bug, a new insect menace that has been found in Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and elsewhere in the mid-Atlantic states, but not in large numbers in New England. He says he expects this stink bug will eventually move into our area.
